What is FOIA
The DC Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) grants the public the right to request access to records from District of Columbia government agencies.
FOIA is intended to ensure transparency, accountability, and open access to public information.
Under FOIA, any person has the right to inspect, copy, or receive copies of public records unless those records are protected from disclosure by specific exemptions.
What Types of Records Can Be Requested?
You can request a wide range of documents, including:
- Government reports and correspondence
- Permits, contracts, and financial records
- Inspection reports
- Meeting minutes and agency policies
- Some records may be exempt due to privacy, security, or legal concerns.
Response Time
Agencies are required to respond to FOIA requests within 15 business days of receipt.
In certain cases, agencies may extend the deadline if the request is complex or requires additional time to gather information.
FOIA Exemptions
While FOIA promotes openness, some records are exempt from disclosure, including:
- Personal privacy information
- Law enforcement and investigation records
- Trade secrets or proprietary business data
- Records related to national or public security.
How to Submit a FOIA Request
FOIA requests can be submitted online through the portal.
